Posh Girl Confidential

All about confidentiality

What it is all about
and
Why you are an individual in your own right

Parents are great and in their early teens most young people use them as their main source of information about health and illness.

But there will be times when you want to go and see your doctor or nurse without your parents or anyone else knowing about it, especially if:

  • you want information about contraception

  • you’re worried that you might be pregnant

  • you’re feeling depressed

  • you’re worried about a friend being abused

  • or you might just feel embarrassed about talking about something personal in front of your parents! Most doctors are very good about keeping things confidential. But if you are worried you can always ask them about their attitude towards young people and confidentiality before you talk to them in detail about your concerns and needs.

What if I want information about contraception?

If I am still worried about my doctor telling my parents can I go to another doctor for advice?

Do I need my parent’s permission to go and see the doctor by myself?

What do I need to do if I want to see a doctor or nurse?

If I need an operation or something, do I need my parent’s permission for this?
