Wondering About Whether I am Gay/Lesbian
Why are some people homosexuals?
How often do homosexual feelings happen in people? Well as far as being sexually attracted
to someone who is the same sex as yourself – that is difficult to know, because no one has
looked for the answer to that question in a kind of systematic way.
How common is it?
However if the question is ‘How many people have had some actual homosexual experience with someone else of the same sex as themselves?’ then a big survey done in the United Kingdom in the mid 1990’s showed that only four in every hundred men, and two in every hundred women – had any kind of homosexual experience between the ages sixteen and nineteen.
The same study also showed that over a person’s whole lifetime only six in every hundred men and
very much fewer women – actually had sex with someone who was of the same sex as themselves.
So most teenage men and women will end up as being heterosexual – that is attracted to, and
having sex, with someone who is the opposite sex than themselves.
Views about sexuality
In various groups of people around the world – people with the same religious beliefs, the same
cultural values, living under the same governments – there are many, many different views about
homosexuality. Amongst some groups of people it is not seen as any kind of problem, whilst in other
groups of people their is strong disapproval of any homosexual behaviour or feeling.
It is however very much hoped that those who have homosexual feelings will be able to grow up
in a society which allows them to be able to express these feelings and to feel at ease with their
own homosexuality.
